The name carries a “mel” prefix. Across the Badaga hatti reference that prefix is never decoration: mel marks the senior or elder settlement and kil the younger one cut off from it, and the two are commonly one place across two generations rather than two unrelated villages.
Mel Ane hatti is the senior (mel) half of the Ane hatti pair recorded in Porangadu. That matters at matchmaking time because families treat the pair as distinct villages for hatti purposes, even where the two settlements have grown into each other.

Where this information comes from
The hatti list is compiled from the “Badaga Hattis by Seeme” master list, itself drawn from Nakku Betta magazine (late 1970s, ed. K.H. Madha Gowder) by Wg Cdr Bellie Jayaprakash, with community corrections layered on. Entries are still being validated with elders in the community, so a spelling or a seeme may yet be corrected. If you know this hatti better than this page does, we would rather hear from you.
